Where Disability Awareness Meets Disability Inclusion

For me, supporting disability awareness,  inclusion, and belonging is personal.

As a sibling advocate working to free my brother from a life of segregation and institutionalization, and an elementary school teacher always needing to facilitate inclusion on my own, I was a huge proponent of disability awareness in schools. But then after beginning to teach a disability studies course, I realized that traditional disability awareness strategies were not working. In fact, they were perpetuating more segregation and ableist thinking.

I restructured my endeavors to take students and educators far beyond simple awareness, and toward inclusion, belonging, community, and connectedness. Since then, countless educators, families, and community members are following suit and taking their communities Beyond Awareness.
